Bipartisan plan to help local communities earns governor’s signature
Michigan communities will now have easier access to critical funding for water infrastructure projects, thanks to a new law spearheaded by state Rep. David Martin, of Davison.
Until now, outdated and overcomplicated processes have made it difficult for many local communities to access federal funding for drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects through a revolving loan fund administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (DEGLE). The solution Martin brought forward streamlines the process and makes it easier for local governments to access funds.
“Everyone understands how important it is to keep improving our municipal water systems, but it can also be tough for smaller, rural communities to afford the necessary upgrades,” Martin said. “The reforms we made will help more communities access existing federal funding, so they can make the necessary improvements and continue delivering clean, safe drinking water to families.”
House Bills 5890-92, now Public Acts 132 to 134 of 2022, make various updates to the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund and Clean Water State Revolving Fund, so critical infrastructure projects for drinking water and wastewater can be executed more efficiently.
